Since I can remember I’ve always had a love for dogs. At the age of six my dad purchased our first family pet, a Black and Tan German Shepherd named Queen. What made me love the dog was the connection her and I had, even with me being a young child. If my parents physically tried to discipline me the dog would get in between us to protect me. I was the only child so Queen was my companion and followed me everywhere I went. It was then that I realized, at 8 years old , that the relationship between a person and their dog was simply amazing.
As I got older my love for dogs grew even stronger. Unlike most kids my age I didn’t pretend to be a wrestling character or ninja, I pretended to be a dog. Literally, I pretended to be a canine, on all fours with my cousin biting each other. Me at the time, often a Rottweiler and him a German Shepherd. I remember I use to love to look at all the different breeds of dogs in the books I would ask my dad to get me. At that point I also began studying the behavior of each breed and understanding the mentally of different dogs.
In 1991 I started watching a TV show named Rin Tin Tin K9 cop and I wanted a dog just like that one on the show. In 1993 my dad got me a dog that looked just like Rin TIn TIn for Christmas. The only problem was that the dog came with no training whatsoever, and at this point everything changed. This dog was everywhere and into everything and my father had enough. My dad was forced to contact a dog trainer and he found a guy by the name of Leroy in Miami. Mr. Leroy and my dad ended up making a deal where my dad would help him train dogs, and in return he would train our dog .
After years of watching, helping and training with my Dad and Mr. Leroy, I had learned so much about controlling a dog. By the age of 14, I took the knowledge given and started training alone with no assistance. Rottweilers, Belgian Malinios, German Shepherds were the breeds I handled the most. As I continued obedience training I started to also find a passion for Personal Protection Training. I was intrigued by the idea of a chaotic dog becoming organized chaos. Everything under your control.
As I got older and starting playing sports I started to slowly drift away from training, but always kept the love for dogs. Even when I became a young adult I owned dogs but didn’t find time to train them. I basically ran from dog training, because I knew I was good at it but I had other plans for myself. I tried multiple things to make a living instead of training and was successful too. That was the thing though. A point came that I was tired of doing multiple things, and feeling like a leaf in the tornado without foundation.
I prayed and to God one night to show me which way in life should I take. I sat for a while, but heard no response looking for God to talk back directly. Well he didn’t, and I didn’t hear anything directly from him.
That night I fell asleep and I remember having a dream. In the dream, I was just standing in the middle of my back yard with a camera around my neck. At the time I didn’t even own a camera and the only thing I had in my back yard were two dogs. After awakening I was really confused about the dream and had no idea what it meant. As days passed, I thought about it more and realized that God was telling me to train my dogs and film it.
I wasn’t a real social media guy but one day I filmed my dog that I’d train doing bite work. The scenario was “what would happen if some would break into your home and your dog was there?" What would your dog do? Of course my trained dog attacked the perpetrator when entering the front door. After that video things seemed to really take off. The video went viral locally. I formed Gatekeepers K9 training and haven’t looked back since.
